Displaced desires : the dislocated self and melancholic desire in Chuang Hua's Crossings and Fae Myenne Ng's Steer toward rock

This essay investigates two aesthetically innovative Chinese American prose narratives, Crossings (1968) by Chuang Hua and Steer Toward Rock (2008) by Fae Myenne Ng, which have so far inspired relatively few scholarly readings. Although published forty years apart, both texts convey a melancholic image of displaced desires—loved ones who are lost, beyond reach, or unresponsive—that is echoed by their complex narrative structure and rich stylistic repertoire. Remembering nature through art : Hölderlin and the poetic representation of life

ABSTRACT For Friedrich Hölderlin, the mediatory role of aesthetics was central to overcoming the challenges of modern life, in particular human beings’ antagonistic relationship to nature. This article claims that Hölderlin preserves and improves what is true in Kant’s conception of the beautiful: that the experience of beauty concerns recognizing our dependence on nature, and that this recognition resonates in the works of artistic geniality as well. Literacy skills seem to fuel literacy enjoyment, rather than vice versa

Children who like to read and write tend to be better at it. This association is typically interpreted as enjoyment impacting engagement in literacy activities, which boosts literacy skills. We fitted direction-of-causation models to partial data of 3690 Finnish twins aged 12. Literacy skills were rated by the twins' teachers and literacy enjoyment by the twins themselves. A bivariate twin model showed substantial genetic influences on literacy skills (70%) and literacy enjoyment (35%). In both skills and enjoyment, shared-environmental influences explained about 20% in each. Promocijas darbā Autobiogrāfiskuma žanriskās formas Latvijas un Somijas sieviešu prozā 20. gadsimtā tiek pētīti latviešu un somu sieviešu autobiogrāfiskie un pusautobiogrāfiskie teksti Tie veido Baltijas jūras reģiona literatūras daļu un pētīti sastatāmi-vēsturiskajā perspektīvā lietojot transnacionālās un postkoloniālās pētījumu metodoloģijas. Disertācijā tiek teoretizēts jautājums par autobiogrāfiskuma izpausmēm modernitātes kontekstā un tā dažādas izpausmes Latvijas un Somijas sieviešu tekstos.
